Selecting a Niche Market that Drives traffic and Money

When selling a product, a lot of people make the mistake of developing their product first, and then trying to find a market for it. The process should really be reversed. Find a market first that spends money, then find out what they want and give it to them.

It is certainly easier said than done, but there are a lot of places online where you can do your niche market research for free. They’ve done most of the work for you already. You just need to know where to go and what to do to connect all the dots.

When you think you’ve found such a niche market, ask yourself these important questions:

1) Do you have an interest or passion for the niche? If not, do you think you can develop one? Or will you get bored with it quickly?

2) Are other people passionate about your niche? If not, do they have a desperate problem they want to solve?

3) Is the market big enough, but not so big you’ll have too much competition when you’re just starting out?

4) Do the people in this niche spend money?

5) What products are being successfully sold right now to this niche? Can you sell something similar? Can you improve it, give them something they want that all other products of their kind are currently lacking?

What are these existing products in your target niche being sold for? Could you be profitable selling a similarly priced item? Or are your potential competitors selling cheap on the front so they can upsell, cross sell, or make their money on the back-end?

• Niche magazines
• TV and radio
• Catalogs and mail order – subscribe to newsletters, purchase inexpensive products, get on mailing lists
• Tabloids and mainstream media
• Billboards and other advertising media – watch what other companies are doing offline in all their advertising media
• Talking to people – at your local watering hole, coffee shop, friends and neighbors, business partners, customers, relatives. Talk to them and OBSERVE. What are their hobbies, their interests, their problems?
• Books – A greatly underutilized idea-generating machine!
• Grabbing a pad and pen and going to your favorite “quiet” spot to brainstorm

One of the biggest mistakes a website can make is to ignore keyword research. It is doesn’t matter how great your website is or how low your prices are, if nobody can find it. For people to be able to find your website, you need to get your website to show up in search engine queries related to your niche. If you don’t take the time to figure out what keywords people are using to find your products or services, all you can do is blindly guess which keywords to use. You’ll probably be able to guess some good keywords, but there are likely hundreds of other keywords that you haven’t even considered. Some of your choices may not even be worth targeting.

Not Everyone Searches Like You

Too many people assume that they know exactly which phrases people will use when searching for their products or services. To you it may make sense for most people to just type in your exact product name. Not everyone thinks and behaves the same way as you do though. Here are some ways that their searches could vary:

-They may throw in an extra descriptive word.
-They may use a synonym for your product
-They might type a whole sentence or just a 2 word phrase.
-They might use regional spelling or terminology.

These are just some examples or search variations. Some other people might not even know what your product is called. Some people may search for a very broad phrase, while others search for something very precise. You just don’t know really know what people are searching for unless you do some research.

How Good Keywords Will Help Your Website

Choosing the best keywords can have a substantial impact on your bottom line. Good keywords can improve your traffic volume, total sales and conversion rates.

By doing keyword research you can get a good idea of which keywords get the most search volume. This ensures that you are targeting keywords that enough people are searching for, instead of wasting resources on keywords that don’t get enough searches. Advanced keyword research will also help identify which keywords have less competition. These keywords would be easier to get rankings and traffic from.

If you increase your traffic volume, your overall sales are bound to improve, especially if you are targeting quality, relevant keywords.

When you do keyword research you will be able to identify which keywords are most relevant to your niche. Targeting highly relevant keywords improves the quality of traffic on your website. These people are much more likely to buy your products or services.

What If You Ignore Keyword Research

Ignoring keyword research is a little like opening up a store but not bothering to put a sign out front. That sign tells your potential customers what your store offers. If those people don’t know what your store specializes in, they may very well walk right by your store without going in. Not putting a ‘sign’ on your website is even worse. Instead of getting a lot of street traffic that might walk into your store, your store is now in a back alley with a sign written in Swahili.

If you don’t do proper keyword research, you either won’t get much traffic or that traffic will be low quality. Usually it will be a combination of both. As a result your sales and profits will suffer. The people looking for your products may never find your website. Essentially you would be wasting the potential of your website. If you want your website to succeed, keyword research is a must!

What is the MoneyWord Matrix?

Almost every niche marketing related eBook or report I’ve read tells me how important it is to pick the right keywords and have them in the content of the websites I build.

Without these keywords your site will never show up in searches. I agree and have seen the difference in the amount of traffic my sites get when I do what the gurus tell me.

There are many ways to find the right keywords and there are many tools that help simplify and automate keyword research.

I’ve come across a niche marketing membership site that shows its members how to do keyword research. Keywords are imported and compared to what is called the MoneyWord Matrix. They explained the concept very well in their videos. After watching the video, members can immediately apply the techniques for finding keywords with good demand and little competition.

Although the keyword research method they present was easy to understand, I can see someone pulling their hair out trying to find hundreds of keywords in one sitting. To make this task easier, the MoneyWord Matrix is built into a piece of software members can install on their computer.

The MoneyWord Matrix rates keywords as Excellent, Good, Fair and Poor based on their demand and competition. I ran a list of keywords for a niche and wrote an article for a keyword that was rated as Excellent. My article showed up in the top ten of Google search results.

Unfortunately to use this piece of software, you have to continue your membership. However, there are alternative keyword tools that arrive at the same conclusion as the MoneyWord Matrix. These other tools just won’t rate the keywords you input as Excellent, Good, etc.
